Class C Motorhomes Windshield Care

Blog

For owners of a Class C motorhome, maintaining the "motor" part of the RV means taking care of a truck or van body. While the rest of the RV has windows, it's the front windshield of this truck or van body that is the most important when you are driving down the road. The windshield doesn't just ensure you can see safely out, it also provides structural support for the cab and any weight the cab is supporting, like the cab-over bunk that most Class C motorhomes feature. The following can help you protect the windshield as well as know when it's time to replace it.

Install a rock screen

Rock screens come under many names, including bug shield. They are little more than a small plexiglass shield that is affixed to the hood front on the truck body. They deflect road gravel (as well as bugs) so it doesn't hit the windshield and cause a chip. If you spend a lot of time on the highway or rough forest roads in your rig, then having a shield installed can help prolong the life of your windshield.

Protect when parked

Not all damage occurs on the road. Chips are less likely to occur when you are parked, but damage from the sun can weaken the seals that hold your windshield in place. Since an RV spends nearly all of its time parked in exposed areas, this can be a major concern. An external window cover is the best solution. These covers are made specially to fit the truck body windshields. They are typically lightly insulated, as well, which further protects the windshield seals while also keeping the interior of the RV more comfortable.

Fix small chips quickly

Never ignore a small chip when it occurs. Generally, a chip can be repaired if it is less than a quarter in size and isn't too close to the window edge. The truck glass service will clean out the chip and then fill it with a special resin that prevents it from getting larger and almost makes the chip invisible. You can find these services in almost any town, so there is no reason not to schedule the repair as soon as the chip occurs -- even if you are on the road.

Don't put off windshield replacement

If you have a crack that can't be repaired, don't put off windshield replacement. The safety of the windshield has been compromised once the crack has progressed beyond the point of repair. This can be a danger in the event of an accident, and in some cases the windshield can even fail while you are driving. You can typically get your RV back on the road within a day or two of the replacement and there is no need for a long shop visit, so there is no reason to hesitate even if you are on vacation. It only takes a couple of hours to replace the window, too, so you will be able to sleep in your RV that night.
